Transform Your Living Space with a Bespoke Media Wall

At Simon’s Kitchens, we’ve seen a sharp rise in demand for media walls across Colchester and the surrounding Essex areas. Homeowners are increasingly looking for ways to combine style, storage, and entertainment into one seamless feature and media walls deliver exactly that.

A well-designed media wall is more than just a place for your TV. It becomes the focal point of your living space, enhancing both the look and functionality of your home.

Why Media Walls Are Trending in Colchester

Clean, Modern Aesthetics

Today’s homeowners want simplicity and elegance. Media walls eliminate visible cables, reduce clutter, and create a streamlined, built-in appearance that instantly elevates a room.

This is especially valuable in modern Colchester homes, where open-plan living and efficient use of space are key priorities.

Designed Around Your Lifestyle

At Simon’s Kitchens, every media wall is tailored to suit your home and how you live. Whether you want integrated shelving, hidden storage, or a statement fireplace, a bespoke approach ensures the final result fits perfectly within your space.

No two homes are the same and your media wall shouldn’t be either.

Multi-Functional Living

Media walls are designed to do more than just hold a television. They can include:

Built-in storage for devices and accessories

Display areas for décor and personal touches

Integrated LED lighting for ambience

Electric fireplaces for warmth and visual impact

This combination of features makes them ideal for modern living, where spaces need to be both practical and visually appealing.

Popular Media Wall Styles in Essex Homes

Warm, Natural Finishes

Wood slat panels, stone textures, and neutral tones are replacing colder grey palettes, bringing warmth and character into living rooms.

Integrated Lighting

Subtle LED lighting adds depth and atmosphere, making your media wall stand out day or night.

Built-In Electric Fires

A popular choice in Colchester homes, electric fireplaces add a cosy focal point without the need for a chimney.

Minimalist Floating Designs

Wall-mounted, floating units create a sense of space and are ideal for smaller or more contemporary interiors.

Why Choose Simon’s Kitchens?

With years of experience in bespoke interiors, Simon’s Kitchens brings craftsmanship, attention to detail, and tailored design to every project.

We work closely with homeowners across Colchester and Essex to design and install media walls that:

Fit seamlessly within your space

Reflect your personal style

Maximise both function and visual impact

From initial concept to final installation, our focus is on delivering a high-quality finish that enhances your home.

A Smart Investment for Your Home

Media walls are not just a design trend; they’re a long-term upgrade. A professionally installed media wall can improve everyday living while also increasing the appeal of your property.

For homeowners in Colchester, it’s a practical way to modernise your home while adding a standout feature that sets your space apart.

Kitchen Spring Clean

Your kitchen has probably been through a lot the last few months. Christmas may even still be making itself known in the form of weird and wonderful chutney’s in the fridge or an appliance that made its way to a prime spot on your worktop during the festivities. It’s time for a refresh.

Tidy

That exotic spice or infused oil set you were gifted or purchased belongs in a cupboard, not taking up precious worktop space. Is that new coffee machine or smart speaker in the right place, or was that just a convenient spot at the time? If it’s not something to throw away, put it away or position it with purpose.

Repair

Granted that not everyone is a DIY wizard, but a few maintenance tasks are within most peoples capabilities. Touch-up any scuffs or scratches on painted doors and don't forget the often mistreated plinths. You can also tighten loose handles and hinges, and replace dead light bulbs.

Clean

Besides all the obvious surfaces that need regular cleaning, show your appliances some love;

Sink - Have some of your dish cloths seen better days? How many bristles are left on that scrubbing brush?

Fridge - Get rid of that salad dressing you opened last summer, wipe the shelves and use baking soda as a natural deodoriser to eliminate any lingering smells.

Oven - Actually make use of that brilliant self cleaning function on the oven!

Microwave - Heat a mixture of water and vinegar or baking soda in a microwave-safe bowl for a few minutes to create steam, which will help loosen any grime, then wipe the interior with a cloth.

Inventory

Are you actually going to use those exotic spices and infused oils you just put away earlier. Or will they stay at the back of the cupboard like that chutney that went out of date in 2016. Quick inventory wins;

Throw anything that's out of date

Donate unopened items you'll never use

Move older items to the front so you remember to use them

Fragrance

For a finishing touch and to mark a new season, introduce a new candle or diffuser with a fresh, light fragrance.

Kitchen Trends for 2026

Natural wood, flutes and statement islands all continue to be popular trends from the last few years, but this article looks at some newer trends worth taking note of.

Softer Organic Designs

Curves have been popular for <s>sometime</s> forever, but the idea of removing hard edges and making the kitchen cosier without compromising function are becoming more prevalent. Spaces are made fluid and softer with rounded islands, arched alcoves and smooth cornered cabinetry. The curves aren’t limited to the kitchen units either as chairs, lighting and splash-backs can all be made to feel softer with a few curves.

Warm Neutral Colours

In tandem with the organic design, and perhaps reflecting a bigger trend of connecting with nature, is a shift away from colder grey colours to something warmer. Earthy neutrals like clay, mushroom and sand, teamed with deep, rich accent colours like burgundy for a powerful pop of colour.

On trend: curves, zoned spaces, earthy neutrals and rich accent colours

Broken-plan layouts

While the open plan kitchen is still ever popular, there is a trend to think in terms of zoned spaces within the kitchen not being just for cooking, but for eating, working or relaxing. These areas can be created by utilising architectural features of the house, such as irregular shaped floor plans, or by creating pass through windows, that allow some privacy and segmentation without closing an area off completely. Unfitted kitchen units like a worktable island or freestanding storage can also be utilised to demarcate kitchen zones.

Multi-function taps

Boiling water taps have been on an upward trend for many years, but they may have reached that ‘must have’ status in 2026 with the additional features they can provide. The same boiling water tap could also provide both chilled, filtered and sparkling water, meaning less visual clutter by replacing kettles and water filter jugs.

Vintage and Heritage Items

A trend to bring a little originality and individuality to the kitchen by mixing the old with the new, whether via vintage lighting or cabinet hardware, or with larger heritage furniture pieces to contrast against the rest of the kitchen.

A Christmas Kitchen

We’ve written before about creating Kitchens for Entertaining and Christmas is one of those times such a kitchen can really shine. Of course, for this time of year you may want to introduce some festive decoration.

Decorating your kitchen for Christmas doesn’t need to be kitschy. Matching decorations to the colour of your kitchen decor can give a modern, subtle look. A traditional look can be achieved with some greenery together with red and gold embellishments.

Here are some ideas and things to consider.

Greenery

Dress window frames and other architectural features with garlands or wreaths. Include natural greenery with holly and ivy trimmings, or plants such as Poinsettia, Cyclamen and Christmas Cactus.

Lights

Those garlands and wreaths mentioned previously can be give a literal ‘glow-up’ by adding fairy lights. These days there are many light variations to choose from besides the traditional strings. Perhaps use curtain lights on a wall or window.

Ornaments

Christmas ornaments don’t just have to be for a tree, although if you have room for a tree in your kitchen why not! They can be used to decorate garlands and wreaths, or scattered on window sills, shelves and other free surfaces.

Tableware

Swap out everyday tableware for festive versions. It needn’t be everything; if could just be a few Christmas themed serving dishes.

Cards

Struggle knowing where to put Christmas cards? Rather than let them pile up ready to go into recycling in the New Year, try stringing them together as a garland, especially around windows.

Bows

Cabinet doors can quickly and easily be decorated with bows. Even appropriately patterned paper ribbon will do the job!

Scents

Scented Candles with festive fragrances such pine, cinnamon or vanilla, or Essential Oil Diffusers with oils such as peppermint or clove.

What Makes a Kitchen Truly Bespoke?

A bespoke kitchen is crafted specifically for the homeowner, designed from scratch, and built using high-quality materials and expert craftsmanship. Unlike modular or off-the-shelf kitchens, a truly bespoke kitchen is tailored to the client’s lifestyle, space, and aesthetic preferences. A genuinely bespoke kitchen can meet your desire for a luxury kitchen, custom kitchen, or handcrafted kitchen.

Bespoke Kitchen Design Tailored to Your Lifestyle

A bespoke kitchen begins with a design created entirely around how you cook, entertain, and use your space. Every element, from the layout and storage to lighting and work surfaces, is shaped by your routines and requirements. This personalised approach ensures maximum comfort, flow, and usability, which cannot be achieved with standardised kitchen ranges. With professionals like Simon's, you also avoid kitchen mistakes.

Made-to-Measure Cabinetry for a Perfect Fit

True bespoke kitchens feature cabinetry built to precise measurements without relying on fillers or stock sizes. This allows every millimetre of space to be used efficiently, which is particularly valuable in awkward or compact rooms. Made-to-measure cabinets create a seamless look and elevate the overall finish.

Unlimited Choice of Premium Materials

A bespoke kitchen offers complete freedom in selecting materials, finishes, colours, and hardware. Clients can choose from a wide range of hardwoods, veneers, natural stones, metals, and hand-applied finishes. This level of choice enables a kitchen that is not only visually striking but also durable, sustainable, and aligned with long-term lifestyle needs.

Handcrafted Quality and Attention to Detail

Expert craftsmanship is at the heart of a bespoke kitchen. Components are often handmade using traditional joinery techniques, ensuring superior strength and longevity. Details such as dovetailed drawer boxes, precision-aligned doors, and flawless finishing reflect the expertise behind the design. This handcrafted approach results in a kitchen that feels cohesive, refined, and built to last.

Custom wine storage can optimise the usage of space.

Custom Storage and Functional Features

A major advantage of bespoke kitchen design is the ability to create storage tailored to specific habits. Examples include:

bespoke larder units built around your ingredients

internal drawer organiser’s designed for your cookware

hidden charging stations or tech hubs

custom wine storage or bar units

integrated recycling and waste systems

All of these can help to future proof your kitchen, making your investment pay for itself for many years.

Seamless Integration With Your Home’s Architecture

A bespoke kitchen is designed to complement the property’s style, whether contemporary, traditional, or transitional. Designers take into account ceiling heights, natural lighting, period detailing, and overall layout. This thoughtful integration ensures the new kitchen enhances the home’s character rather than competing with it.

Long-Lasting Quality and Investment Value

Because bespoke kitchens use superior materials and construction methods, they offer excellent longevity and durability. Components can be repaired, refinished, or updated over time, making this type of kitchen a long-term investment that can increase the value of your home.

A Collaborative, Personalised Design Process

The bespoke journey includes consultation, sketches, material sampling, technical planning, and installation carried out with precision. This hands-on collaborative approach gives clients confidence, clarity, and full creative input, bringing your own personality into the design.

Choosing the Right Worktop for Your Bespoke Kitchen

This article is part of a series looking at choices for 3 key areas of bespoke kitchen design; Flooring, Cabinets and Worktops.

Your kitchen worktop does far more than provide a surface for cooking, it’s the stage on which everyday life unfolds. From meal preparation and family gatherings to the finishing touch of your kitchen’s design, the right worktop can elevate your entire space.

Choosing the perfect material means finding a balance between beauty, practicality, and durability; a surface that complements your kitchen’s style and stands up to the demands of daily life.

What to Consider Before Choosing a Worktop

Before you fall in love with a particular look, it’s worth considering how your kitchen functions day to day.

Durability & Daily Use

Ask yourself how much wear your worktops will see. If you cook often, choose a material that resists scratches, stains, and heat. For lighter use or occasional entertaining, you can prioritise aesthetics over toughness.

Maintenance

Some worktops, like marble or solid wood, need regular sealing or oiling to maintain their beauty. Others, like quartz or laminate, are low-maintenance and easy to clean. Be honest about how much care you’re willing to give.

Design Harmony

Your worktop should complement your cabinetry, flooring, and lighting. Consider colour, texture, and finish (matte or gloss, light or dark) to create balance in your design.

Sustainability

If eco-friendly design is a priority, look for responsibly sourced wood, recycled composites, or manufacturers with green certifications.

Popular Kitchen Worktop Materials

Quartz (Engineered Stone)

Best for: Contemporary kitchens seeking both beauty and practicality.
Quartz combines natural stone with resin, creating a non-porous, low-maintenance surface. It’s resistant to stains and scratches and available in a huge range of colours.
Keep in mind: Avoid placing hot pans directly on it as extreme heat can cause damage.

Granite

Best for: Traditional and luxury kitchens.
A natural stone with rich variation, granite is hard-wearing and heat-resistant. Each slab is unique, adding depth and character to your space.
Keep in mind: It requires sealing to prevent staining.

Marble

Best for: Statement islands and elegant kitchens.
Marble’s veining and timeless appeal make it a favourite for high-end designs.
Keep in mind: It’s softer than granite and prone to etching or staining, but ideal for those who appreciate natural ageing.

Matching Worktops to Your Kitchen Style

Kitchen Style

Recommended Worktops

Traditional

Granite, marble, solid wood

Modern / Minimal

Quartz, ceramic, solid surface

Farmhouse / Rustic

Wood, natural stone

Industrial

Concrete, stainless steel

Scandinavian

Light wood, matte quartz

Tip: Consider mixing materials, for example; a marble island paired with durable quartz prep surfaces creates a bespoke, layered look.

Edge Profiles & Finishing Touches

The details matter. Edge profiles can subtly change your kitchen’s overall feel:

Square or Straight Edge – clean and modern.

Bullnose or Ogee – soft and traditional.

Bevelled Edge – adds definition.

Waterfall Edge – creates a striking, contemporary feature.

Final Thoughts

Your kitchen worktop is where design meets daily life. The right surface will not only enhance your kitchen’s look but also make it more enjoyable to use.

Whether you love the timeless luxury of marble, the resilience of quartz, or the warmth of solid wood, choose a worktop that reflects your style, lifestyle, and long-term needs.

In a bespoke kitchen, every detail matters and your worktop is one of the most important.
